Ants Australia

Před rokem

An original documentary on Australia’s iconic “Meat Ants” (Iridomyrmex purpureus), also known as “Rainbow Ants”. From their massive colonies and nest structures, to their fierce ability to overwhelm their victims, to the way they kickbox to resolve conflict, to their avid farming of leafhoppers and aphids...Meat ants are some very fascinating ants indeed!

when you film ants, did you ever try to make a circle perimeter of vinegar? seems like a good solution to me, a good sprayer should do the trick. how do ants react to vinegar? also, lemon juice was said to be efficient to repel insects and other critters.

Great video,I really enjoyed watching it.All through I'm thinking how do you get shots like that without the camera getting swarmed and then those shots near the end showing how it happens to you too.I recently tried to do a timelapse of a nearby meat ant colony consuming a chicken wing but within 30 seconds they swarmed the camera so thick I could hardly see it. Something I have noticed about the meat ants is if one bites me and I stay near them and another comes near me it will go to the bite site and bite me again in exactly the same spot.I think they must be leaving a scent or pheromone behind when they bite to excite their mates. I am currently living with half a dozen or so different species of ants with nests all around nearby.Very interesting to photograph but sometimes a little dangerous, eucalyptus spray on standby.

LOL, Sugar Ants blocking Meat Ants entrances to hinder day time work, sounds like work, night shift always sometimes messing things up after day shift gets things set up for the next day or second shift screws things up even after you get things set up for them, meaning extra work for day shift to make up for the screw ups.

I used to catch meat ants when i was a kid and start little ant colonies in ice cream tubs full of soil, glad wrap over the top, and tubs connected with clear tubing so i could watch them walk between sections. The jaws are so impressive. They were the only ant that would cut through my skin when they bit

In an area I lived in, these ants are very aggressive. They have huge nests and long ,wide trails with thousands of ants travelling along them. If you walk along a path and the ants are going across the path, they will turn towards's a bit freaky when thousands of ants that create a dark line across the path, then that line changes direction towards you. And can actually follow you if you change direction.

The kickboxing and the satellite nests are particularly interesting mainly because one of the competing colonies that are kickboxing each other might've been a satellite of the other colony along time ago. Has anyone been able to confirm weather this happens?

At twelve yrs old, I got an ant farm for Christmas & it was a real delight, from watching for 3, weeks as they dug their tunnels, then I would watch them for hours as the went about their day. I saw them bury their dead, play catch with a grain of sand, kissing, hugging & playing hide-&-go-seek. It was a wonderful present!
